FAQ's
General Questions
Typically, 2 years, if your labels are stored inside their original sealable bag and kept at 21°C and 50% relative humidity.
Surface energy is the degree to which the adhesive and the material's surface repel or attract.
Low Surface Energy (LSE)
The lower the surface energy of an application material the harder adhesion becomes, resulting in labels peeling or falling off altogether. Typical low surface materials include; PVC, Acrylic, Polyethylene, Polypropylene and PTFE Fluoropolymer (Teflon®)
High Surface Energy (HSE)
The higher the surface energy of the application material, the easier the label will stick. Typical high surface materials include: Copper, Stainless Steel, Aluminium, Zinc, Tin, Glass, Nylon, Polyester (PET), ABS Plastic, Polycarbonate.
To gain the best possible adhesion, an adhesive must thoroughly “wet out” the surface to be bonded.
We would recommend using a thermal transfer printer for low-volumes, as labels can be printed in precise quantities with minimal wastage.
In direct thermal printing the printhead applies heat directly onto a heat-sensitive material, which changes colour to display the data required. In thermal transfer printing, the printhead heats a wax or resin ribbon against the label material instead.
While both printing methods have their benefits, thermal transfer printing is by far the more durable option. This is especially true when labels are exposed to chemicals, solvents and high temperatures (including sunlight), as these may destroy data printed on direct thermal labels.
Thinking of different uses for our labels, we developed two types of adhesive to suit a diverse range of applications.
Our Standard Adhesive: is solvent acrylic so doesn’t break down with age and is perfect for smooth, flat or gently curved glass, metal, stainless steel, aluminium, smooth powder coats or similar high-energy surfaces.
Our High Grip Adhesive: is also solvent acrylic and doesn’t deteriorate with age and provides excellent adhesion to both high-energy surfaces such as glass, stainless steel, aluminium, smooth powder coats, and low surface energy surfaces including ABS, Polycarbonate and Polypropylene.
If you require the assurance of a truly permenant adhesive, especially outdoors you will need a solvent acrylic adhesive. It is the combination of solvent and acrylic that makes the adhesive set and it continues to cure with age, in effect becoming part of the surface it is applied to.
If a label states 'aquious acrylic adhesive', or just 'acrylic adhesive', it wil be water based and can dry out or break down with age, curl and fall off. Water based adhesive labels are cheaper due to their lower performance.
The optimim curing time of solvent acrylic adhesives is 48 to 72 hours with continued curing with age. Water based acrylic adhesives are as good as they get immediately and can only deteriorate. This is important to note because in comaprison your first impression may be that the water based acrylic label adhesives are more sticky.
